Taxi-booking service Uber has had to apologise after tweeting a promotional message that ended up being a sexist mess.
The bungling firm, which rarely goes very long without whipping up some kind of storm, sent a message to its customers in Bangalore saying ‘Dear husbands, a gentle reminder – today is Wife Appreciation Day’ before going on to recommend that these ‘husbands’ let their wives ‘take a day off from the kitchen’.
Now, Uber could have meant wives that were fitting kitchens, but they almost certainly didn’t because they quickly tweeted that the message was ‘totally inappropriate’.
The excellently named Bozoma Saint John, Uber’s chief brand ambassador, also weighed in with tweetfuls of mea culpa, saying that the stunt was ‘completely unacceptable’.
The firm has form with sexism. Earlier this year, it sacked 20 staff members after an investigation into sexual harassment within the company. It must have been pretty bad because founder and chief executive Travis Kalanick left during the damning episode.
Do you have a wife who works for Uber? What do you do on ‘wife appreciation day’? Please let us know.
